What is diabetic retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels in the retina - the light‑sensitive tissue at the back of your eye. With the right care, many people keep good vision for years to come. At our central London clinic, we treat diabetic retinopathy with laser eye surgery.

Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy

You should seek medical attention if you notice:

  • Blurred or patchy vision

  • Dark spots or floaters in your vision

  • Flashes of light

  • Difficulty seeing at night

  • Sudden changes in vision

With early diagnosis and treatment, diabetic retinopathy can often be managed successfully.

How laser eye surgery for diabetic retinopathy works

Professor Williamson treats diabetic retinopathy with laser treatment. This works by sealing leaking blood vessels or preventing the growth of new, abnormal vessels in the retina, helping to slow or stop the progression of the disease and protect your vision.

The procedure is performed in‑clinic, usually takes less than 30 minutes per eye, and is done under local anaesthetic drops for comfort. Most patients can return to light activities the same day.

Photobiomodulation for diabetic retinopathy

In addition to laser therapy, some patients may benefit from photobiomodulation, a painless, non-invasive light treatment designed to support the health of retinal cells. PBM works by using specific wavelengths of light to:

  • Reduce inflammation in the retina
  • Improve blood flow and oxygen delivery to the eye
  • Support the metabolism of retinal cells affected by diabetes
  • Help stabilise the retina alongside other treatments

The procedure is carried out in-clinic, with you simply sitting in front of a PBM device for a few minutes per session.

PBM can be a useful adjunct for certain stages of diabetic retinopathy, and Professor Williamson will advise whether this approach is appropriate for your case.
